Sandton to OR Tambo:
every option compared

The drive between Sandton and OR Tambo International is about 35 kilometres. In free-flowing traffic that is roughly 30 minutes. At 07:00 on a Monday, or between 16:00 and 18:30 on the M1 and R24, it can be well over an hour. Every option below lives or dies on that one variable.

The Gautrain

The fastest and cheapest option for one person travelling light. Sandton station to the airport takes about 15 minutes and costs in the region of R200. It runs on rails, so traffic is irrelevant — which is genuinely hard to beat.

The catch is everything either side of the train. You still have to get to Sandton station and from the airport station to your terminal, you are handling your own luggage the whole way, and the service does not run through the night. If your flight lands at 23:40 or leaves at 05:30, the Gautrain is not an option at all.

Uber, Bolt and e-hailing

Expect roughly R350 to R550 for a standard car, and R450 to R600 for Uber Black, on a normal day. The important word is normal. Prices move with demand, and demand peaks at exactly the times business travellers fly — early weekday mornings, Sunday evenings, and December. Peak periods commonly add 20–50%.

The second issue is certainty. You are booking on demand, so you are standing outside international arrivals watching a map and hoping someone accepts. Usually fine. Occasionally not, and you cannot know in advance which day it will be.

Shared shuttles

Cheaper per seat, but you travel on the operator’s schedule and route. That usually means waiting for other passengers to land and detouring to drop them off. Fine for a holiday. Difficult to justify when someone bills their time by the hour.

A private chauffeur

So which should you pick?

Travelling alone with a cabin bag in the middle of the day, take the Gautrain — nothing beats it on speed or price, and we will happily tell you so.

If you are moving more than one person, carrying real luggage, flying before dawn or after the trains stop, or collecting someone whose first impression of the country matters, the calculation changes. At that point the question is not what the trip costs, but what it costs you if it goes wrong.
