When to leave for OR Tambo
From Sandton, OR Tambo is about 35 kilometres on the R24 or the R21. Off-peak that is a comfortable 35 minutes. Between 06:00 and 08:30, or 15:30 and 18:30, the same run regularly takes an hour and can take ninety minutes when there is an incident on the Gillooly’s interchange.
Our rule of thumb for a domestic departure is to be kerbside two hours before your flight, and three hours for international. Working backwards from that, we usually suggest leaving Sandton at 03:45 for an 07:00 international departure, and around 05:00 for a 09:00 domestic one.
You do not have to work this out yourself. Tell us your flight number when you book and we set the pick-up time from the airline’s schedule, then track the flight on the day.
The other Johannesburg airport
Lanseria sits north-west of the city and is materially closer to Fourways, Dainfern, Bryanston and Midrand than OR Tambo is. From Sandton it is roughly 30 kilometres and often the faster of the two, because you avoid the eastern corridor entirely.
FlySafair, Airlink and LIFT all operate from Lanseria to Cape Town and Durban. If your diary allows either airport, it is usually the more civilised option, and our fixed fare from Sandton reflects the shorter distance.

How long does it take from Sandton to OR Tambo?
About 35 minutes off-peak and up to 90 minutes in heavy traffic. We set your pick-up time from your flight, not from an average.
Do you track flights?
Yes. Give us your flight number and we watch the arrival time. If you land late there is no extra charge, and you have one hour of free waiting time from touchdown.
Do you cover Pretoria and Centurion?
Yes. Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand and Waterfall are all within our normal operating area, and the Sandton to Pretoria run is a published fixed fare from R1,190.
