The corridor between the airport and Gauteng’s business parks — where the Gautrain almost works, and why almost is the problem.

Midrand, Waterfall City and Centurion sit along the spine between Johannesburg and Pretoria, and between them they hold a very large share of Gauteng’s corporate head offices. From OR Tambo you are looking at roughly 35 to 45 km and, off-peak, about 35 to 45 minutes on the R21.
The Gautrain problem
There are Gautrain stations at Midrand and Centurion, and the airport line connects through Sandton. On paper that solves it.
In practice, Waterfall City, Kyalami, the Midrand office parks and most of Centurion’s corporate campuses are a meaningful drive from those stations. You arrive at the station and still need a car — usually with luggage, often in a hurry, sometimes in the rain.
What the run is actually like
The R21 between the airport and this corridor is one of the better roads in Gauteng and moves well outside peak. The friction is at the ends: the airport in the evening peak, and the last few kilometres into an office park.
Northbound in the morning and southbound in the late afternoon are the slow directions. If you are collecting a visiting colleague for a 09:00 meeting in Waterfall, build in more time than the map suggests.

This corridor is where most inbound corporate visitors actually end up — head office is in Waterfall or Centurion far more often than in the Johannesburg CBD. If you are hosting a group, a single account and one invoice is usually less administration than fifteen people expensing their own rides.

Roughly 35 to 40 km via the R21, usually 35 to 45 minutes outside peak traffic.
Can I take the Gautrain from the airport to Centurion?
Yes, changing at Sandton. The limitation is getting from Centurion station to most office parks, which still needs a car.
