how to get there
About 50 kilometres from the airport and the easiest wine region to reach — but the way you travel decides whether anyone in the car can actually taste anything.

Stellenbosch sits roughly 50 km from Cape Town International and about 45 km from the city centre, mostly along the N2. Outside peak traffic the drive is around 35 to 45 minutes, which makes it the most accessible of the major wine areas.
Getting there from the airport
Because Stellenbosch is east of the city, coming from the airport you are already halfway there — you do not need to go into Cape Town first. That surprises people arriving for a wedding or a conference at one of the estates.
There is no direct rail link worth planning around, and e-hailing on this route is workable but not guaranteed, particularly late at night or for the return leg from an estate where signal is patchy.
The drinking problem
This is the part worth thinking about honestly. Stellenbosch is a wine region, and the whole purpose of visiting is usually tasting. If you self-drive or hire a car, someone in your group has to abstain for the entire day.
South Africa’s legal blood-alcohol limit for ordinary drivers is below 0.05 g per 100 ml — which for many people is roughly a single drink. On an estate tour, that limit is reached almost immediately.
A chauffeur solves the actual problem
Nobody has to nominate a driver, the car stays with you between estates, and the bags and any cases you buy stay in the boot. We quote a fixed fare for the transfer, or hourly hire for a full day across several estates.
Airport to Stellenbosch, or city to Stellenbosch?
If you are flying in for an estate wedding, a conference or a stay in the Winelands, go straight from the airport. Detouring into Cape Town adds an hour and achieves nothing.
If you are already staying in the City Bowl or on the Atlantic Seaboard, the run out is 45 minutes to an hour depending on the N2, and worse if you leave between 16:00 and 18:00.
Practical notes
Estates close earlier than restaurants — many tasting rooms wind down between 16:00 and 17:00. Plan the day backwards from the last tasting rather than forwards from breakfast.
The roads between estates outside the town are narrow, unlit at night and sometimes gravel. That is a genuine argument for a driver who knows them, particularly in winter when it gets dark early.
